When looking around at board game reviews of some of the most top rated board games, Dominion by Rio Grande Games came to the top of the list. Not only was it rated as awesomely durable and fun, but its also educational which is awesome. According to reviewers this game has something to offer for everyone, which is great because it allows for a diverse group of players.

In this game almost everyone starts out on even playing ground which allows for some interesting competition between players to generate. In the beginning of the game everyone starts out with 10 cards and the same possessions. In the game you are playing the role of a monarch that had a nice little kingdom, but you would like to expand that nice little kingdom into a bigger nicer kingdom. Only problem is there is limited land, and since the other monarchs have gotten the same great idea you now have to compete to grab a hold of what land there is left.

Each monarch plays their cards, hires minions and uses their resources to gain power. Make swag improvements to your castles and fill your treasury to gain the most land to win the game. You’ll take out your friends in a few swipes, and you’ll all be laughing at the end when you see how badly one person beat another, lets hope so anyways!

Dominion can be played by Dungeons and Dragons fans, those looking for an alternative to playing Monopoly on game night, and your average teenager, its guaranteed that each of these people will have fun playing this game, because no round in it is ever the same. Have fun and be sure to check out Dominion.

If you aren’t into your everyday board games, then maybe the answer to your board game dilemma is trying out an action board game. Action board games bring in mystery, adventure, and depending on they type of game good laughs. Below are some fun action games that will blow your ordinary board games out of the water.

Identity Crisis Game

Are you good at imitations, do you like acting? This game is full of that. Players have to act out and guess who each person is imitating, the bonus here is unlike charades, people are allowed to talk and use as many words as they can to describe the identity they are acting out. In the crisis round of this game though, only one word can be used to describe who they are trying to be. For a night of fun be sure to try this game out.

Middle Age Crazy

This is a fun game for adults that will have everyone rolling with laughter as they try to guess who wrote which answer to the dilemmas that are presented to you in the game. Middle Age Crazy has four books full of different life dilemmas that we all run into at some point whether it be in love, heath, work, or with money. The game leader asks the dilemmas while the others answer and then submit their responses anonymously and the other players try to match the response with the author. Lets just hope none of the answers cause a midlife crisis!

Alien Autopsy Game

Ever dreamed of getting abducted by aliens in a UFO or wondered just what these little green men have inside? Well, then this game may be of interest to you. Have fun with friends trying to remove the alien’s various body parts without setting off its creepy scream. This game is a new twist on the classic Operation that we played as kids.

There are many great action board games out there that offer a different perspective on traditional board games. Be sure to try playing a few, and you’ll find that board games can be fun again.

Summer vacation is the one time of the school year that most children look forward to because they are out of school for three whole months and picture their days full of swimming, playing outside, hanging out with friends, sleeping in, watching cartoons in the morning, and relaxing. The last thing on their mind is keeping their brains active over summer vacation so that they can keep up with being in school mode. Most kids end up going back to school after a few months drained after the first few days back. In order help your kids move more easily through the first week of school slump, try out some of these great educational board games with them over the summer that will keep their minds active.

American Trivia

If your child has to learn their US history, then this is the perfect game for them. This game features trivia questions about US geography, history, and general information. It’s easy enough that they are sure to know some answers, but if they don’t have the correct answer then they’ll learn new facts in a fun way. This game allows for 2 to 8 players, which is great if your child wants to invite over a few friends to play.

Learning Resources Multiplication and Division Game Board Book

This game features multiplication and division skills that can be matched for multiple grade levels. It has easy instructions for how to play the game and can either be played with multiple people or independently. It certainly offers a more interesting alternative to having your child sit down with a workbook for an hour a day over the summer and will improve their basic math skills. We all know that a good basic foundation in math goes a long way when learning more complicated concepts!

Wildlife Animals Nature Matching Kid’s Memory Game

If you are looking for a fun way to teach your little ones about wildlife and nature, you can’t go wring with this game. As your children try to match the beautifully illustrated animals by Kevin Hawkes, they will enjoy learning new names of animals and being able to recognize them if they are lucky to see them in the wild!

Educational board games are a fun way of promoting learning with your child, and a great way to spend some quality time with them. Keep their minds active and have fun all at the same time!

So, you may have heard of a “Podcast” or “Podcasting”. I just wanted to talk about it a little bit. A “Podcast” or “Netcast” is a way of broadcasting over the internet. There are thousands if not ten’s of thousands of podcasts available on the internet. The best part is that they’re completely free. Though they are not tied to Apple, using Itunes is the easiest way to listen to one.

There are some very good gaming podcasts available, I wanted to share some of my favorites: (All of these are available directly through itunes.)

* Gaming Steve – This is at the top of my list, Steve knows the gaming industry and has very good insight into it. * 1UP Yours – Another great gaming podcast, this is a group of guys from 1up.com who record once a week. They are fun to listen to and have great info most of the time. * Broadcast Gamer – I just started listening to Broadcast Gamer recently. This guy has a weekend podcast that is about an hour long and several during the week with deals and reviews. * The Instance – This is a gaming podcast related to World of Warcraft. * Xbox Live’s Major Nelson – Major Nelson works for Microsoft and talks about the Xbox every week. He often has interviews with people working on games, this is another insightful view into the gaming industry. * Evil Avatar – I also just recently started listening to these guys. Phil and Amanda host this one. It’s basically a live show recorded Friday nights, they have a great community of people who call in and talk about games and comic books. Check out their forums for a good group of people. * The Dice Tower – A podcast about boardgames with Tom Vasel (board game reviewer) and Sam Healey. Usually they do 2 reviews and a “Top Ten” list. * Have Games, Will Travel – Another boardgame podcast. * TWIT.tv – not a gaming podcast, but this is one of my favorite podcasters out there, Leo Laporte. The Twit.tv network has maybe 14 different podcasts each week, my favorites are TWIT (this week in technology) and KFI Techguy (recorded from KFI News Radio each Sat. and Sun.).

As you can see these are only a few of many, many podcasts out there. If you want to find your own, you can go to the itunes music store (in itunes) and click on podcasts, there is a plethora of information there!

Also, Podcasting is a great way to share how you feel about a topic. It’s easy to set one up, all you need is a computer with a microphone and an internet provider to host you podcast. Libsyn.com is an ISP that only hosts podcasters, so that may be a good way to start.

Podcasting is here and it’s not going anywhere, so now is the time to get on the bandwagon!

You just never know where you’re going to find a fun board game, but among the latest games to hit the stores are those devoted to the Twilight saga. The movie, Twilight: New Moon, is due for release in US theaters in late November 2009. Naturally, all of the merchandise related to the film has to hit the store shelves before the movie comes out.

In the first movie, Bella moved from her home in Arizona to live with her father in Washington State. She fell in love with a perpetually young vampire, Edward Cullen, and the drama ensued, as did the merchandising possibilities. So with the movie came the calendars, bracelets, trading cards, journals and all other sorts of treasures. There were a couple of fun board games for the offing, including a Scene It? Twilight Deluxe Edition and a board game with the simple title, Twilight.

Scene It? Twilight Edition features hundreds of clips, trivia questions and on-screen puzzlers from the movie. The object of the game is to race other players around the board to be the first to enter the Twilightening Round and find out who knows the most about this popular movie. There are customized mini-games and bonus activities that will challenge your observation, memory and puzzle solving skills and that are unique to Scene It? Twilight Edition. Most of all, you get the chance to see more Bella, Edward, Jacob and the gang while you relive your favorite Twilight moments.

Twilight is a more standard board game experience. According to the manufacturer, players get to “reenact the hunt for Bella through the woods of Olympic Peaks.” The players are divided into teams, with the first team playing as Bella and Edward while the other represents James and Victoria. Players try to collect all eight “Scenes” of the Twilight story to tell the tale of Edward and Bella. The game is rated 3 1/2 stars on Amazon.

With the release of the second movie in the series The Twilight Saga: New Moon –The Movie Game is now for sale. The more you know about the movie, the better your chances in the game, which is a greater challenge before the movie opens. The game includes a board with images from the movie, scene cards with images from the movie, playing pieces and dice. You travel the board, answer questions, and try to be the first player to collect all 8 scenes from New Moon and reunite Bella and Edward to win.

Whatever the choice, Twilight fans will be delighted to have the chance to add a game based on their favorite movie to all of their other fun board games.

I’ve talked with game designers who are so attached to their projects, it’s like the dress up games are their babies. This can be good, because it means designers really take the time to turn their ugly, fat, bawling pile of diaper filler into a useful member of society. And it can be bad, when ‘parents’ turn a child who might have become an exemplary model of behavior into a disrespectful teenager, who then goes on to spend most of his life in prison.

This thought occurred to me when I was playing Crossroads at dress up games, though I keep having to go back and remind myself what the damned thing is called. Couldn’t give it a catchy title, could you? No, you have to go and name your kid something as ridiculous as A’paul-o or Vulva. Seriously, I’ve seen both of those. The kids are practically destined to come out warped.

And the reason I thought of bad game designers screwing up perfectly good youngsters is because Crossroads at… whatever the hell it is… shows a whole lot of promise. It scored pretty well on the standardized tests, and was able to memorize the entire monologue for the Christmas play. But then the game designer screwed it up, and now the kid is bouncing between military schools and playing with matches.

The idea of Crossroads is that you have a team of adventurers moving through the countryside and overcoming obstacles to finish the big quest. Players will take on the roles of those characters as they battle brutally ugly monsters and win oddly pointless treasure. The player with the most experience at the end of the game is the winner. Since I very much enjoy adventure games, this shows a lot of promise.

But there are so many things the designer did wrong. Starting with the art and proceeding to the ludicrously messy arithmetic (but not ending there), this promising and potentially entertaining game ended up smoking weed and hanging out behind the gas station on school nights. Even worse, the fun parts of the game are buried underneath laughably horrible art and staggering piles of completely unnecessary math.

The ideas are so good. You’ll compete for the experience you need to advance, with players gaining more points for doing more damage. The first few monsters will probably kick your asses, but eventually you’ll learn enough to face down the meanest boogers with little more than a scratch. By the end of the game, you’ll be juggernauts of violent power, with magic weapons and incredible abilities and powerful card combinations. So far, Little Johnny is practically an honor student.

One moderately neat feature is that you won’t automatically play the same guy every time. Each time you start a quest, you’ll bid for the chance to pick the character you want. If you’ve spent all your experience buffing out the fighter and someone grabs him first, you might find yourself with a really weak bard as your only option (let’s face it, bards are like leftover D&D characters). You may have to balance your character growth to have a good chance with all the characters. And then it gets really bad when the alternating character system falls apart. It’s a cool concept, but eventually, people are going to dump their points and focus their cards into particular characters. If you do this, everyone else would be wise to do the same, and then you’re all basically playing the same guys for the whole game anyway. The whole character-swapping system is almost entirely ruined because the smartest way to play is to do away with it in the first place. As if the rest of this sloppy, underdeveloped game weren’t bad enough already, the graphic designer for this game must have been completely blind. The art, for lack of a better word, is completely horrible. Some of it is crudely drawn on a computer, and the rest is cribbed right out of clip art collections and manipulated to be more ugly. Seriously. I’m not making that up. In more than one case, they would have been better off just using the picture they got in the first place, and not messing with it. Pictures are stretched, filtered, poorly clipped and otherwise mutilated. The image for the Back Stab card shows a naked man coming uncomfortably close to a horse’s behind. Now Johnny appears to be sexually assaulting the neighbor’s pets. The end result of all the bad decisions that went into Crossroads at Dark Lion Pass is a game that is barely enjoyable, and almost unplayable. You can see the promise fashion games had at the start, but it crumbles to cigarette ashes at the club-fisted hands of the designer who thought he was finishing it. I would hate to have my name attached to anything related to this game, outside of a review telling you not to buy it, and I can promise you I won’t be playing it again. I’m not a big fan of recalcitrant youths in real life, and fashion games that make me think of teenage burnouts are definitely on my ‘to be avoided’ list. With a little luck, this game will go to prison and find Jesus. Then it can come out and be a productive member of society. It will need a mentor to guide it, groom it, and for God’s sake, get rid of all that clumsy math.
