It is a full sized board displaying rank & file. Board diplays proper board aet up & tells movement of pieces & pawns. It comes with a handout describing brief rules of the game. You will need a separate book to explain the rules of chess in more detail. It is a great first chess set & I have used it a great deal. Plastic pieces are large enough & sturdy enough to be used easily.
