Product Description
Sand Castles is a cooperative game which encourages players to work together towards a common goal. Players help each other and are never ‘against’ each other enabling youngsters to play with older brothers and sisters without always being beaten. These are great family games. Sand Castles is a gentle game about helping each other build sand castles by the beach. It all starts out as a quiet, beautiful day with water lapping at the shore. But a wind begins to stir and some large waves move slowly towards the castles. Can the castles all be finished before the big waves wash in? There is a better chance of finishing if players work together to gather sand, share pails and shovels, and work hard together. Decision making is required to determine if a sand wall should be made or do the players keep working on building the castles. An exciting game of strategy that gets children thinking. Includes a 6 x 24 in. board, pails, shovels, sand castles, waves, sand walls, die, and chart. Parent’s Choice Approval Rating. For 5 to 7 years old and for 1-8 players.Box measures 13 x 6.5 x 1.25 inches. The games are made with recycled components – game boards, label papers, bond papers, and cardboard boxes. Players work together to keep the tide at bay in this creative, cooperative game from Family Pastimes. The goal is to build three different sand castles before the waves come in and wash them away. Players take turns rolling a die, with a result of 1 to 3 earning the player construction materials (shovel, sand, pail), and a 4 to 6 forcing the player to move a wave one space closer to shore. A few bad rolls can quickly turn the tide against the group, and the players must work together in order to win. Players can help each other by pooling their resources: if a player has a pail and a shovel and the next player rolls and gets some sand, then together they can turn all three resources in to get one section of sand castle. In addition, any player can build a sand wall instead of a section of castle. When a wave hits a sand wall, it is sent back to its starting space, buying the players more time.
Strategy, planning, cooperation, and the random time limit combine for an exciting game. Parents and older children will have fun working with the younger kids to finish building castles before the waves roll in. –Michael Fehlauer

My 6yo son and I really like this one. We have several from Family Pastimes, and this is in the top choices! Combines strategic thinking and really working together (although I like that you can choose to make your own sandcastle or work with others). Hard to play with kids younger than 5 or 6.
