Based on the wildly popular Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical, the Disney Channel’s High School Musical DVD board game is an above average companion to the ever-growing HSM empire. If you’re familiar with the Scene It? DVD games and are hoping for the “start of something new,” you will find this pared-down version aimed primarily at children six and over “sticking to the status quo.” It comes with the High School Musical board game DVD, game board, and six character pieces. Gameplay is fast-paced and you can adjust the length to fit your timeframe. Choose one of six characters (Gabriella, Troy, Sharpay, Ryan, Taylor, and Chad) and answer trivia, spot the actual (or “so not”) scene stills, sing in the blanks of your favorite HSM songs, and complete the missing dance moves to further your character to the final call backs. Questions and challenges range from the appropriately appellative freshman to senior difficulty. The first player to reach the final call backs chooses the theme for the final showdown. All of the players that made it past the auditions compete to become the star of the high school musical.

The game’s how-to was quick, simple, and useful. The practice mode takes you through the dance moves, and although we were expecting the whole musical numbers, the redacted walkthroughs are fairly thorough. Mrs. Darbus narrates your way throughout the game and has inspiring, drama-related banter that was only a minor annoyance to the adults after an hour of playing. The only troubles we came across were the constant clicking of the DVD remote after every scene in game, and also, an errant click while answering questions cannot be reversed, thus interrupting the gameplay. The songs and dances inspire players to get up and act as this game provides a bit of excitement for all of those fans of High School Musical.

5 Reveiws for Disney Channel’s High School Musical DVD Board Game

  1. GA girlie says:

I bought this for my 11 year twin daughters, who are huge HSM fans. They were so excited to get it, and couldn’t wait to play the game. Unfortunately, after we played the game for about 15 minutes, they got bored and wanted to stop. I have to admit, it was not too thrilling or interesting to play. The game set up is a little odd, and rather dull. Save your money for the “Jump In” CD – the next hot Disney TV musical out.

  2. 5 eight year olds played this game last night before venturing to the High School Musical Concert. It was the perfect beginning. They learned the dance moves to 3 songs, and then got to see the dances performed live onstage. They were able to dance along with the cast!

  3. A. Elvir says:

Is a great toy for little kids between 6-10 yrs that have seen the movie many times, for the older ones it becomes boring, my 6 year old girl enjoys it very much as she sings the songs and dance while playing but my older daughter just played once and then she became bored. If you haven’t seen the movie you can’t play with your kids because this game is 100% based on movie clips, songs and dance.

  5. Heather says:

My daughter had a lot of fun with this game, for 2 weeks. Then she lost interest in it, if I’d known how quickly it would fall out of favor I wouldn’t have bought it. The game itself is fine but limited in scope, on top of that it was based on a fad which I thought would last a bit longer than it did (with my daughter). I would only recommend this game for die-hard HSM fans. If you have a video game console, I recommend Disney Sing It! instead as it has the HSM songs and other Disney channel stars’ songs as well.
