4 Reveiws for Last Night on Earth – The Zombie Game

  1. I was really surprized at how much fun this game was. I received this game as a gift. I would not have bought it for myself. We broke it out on a snow day and played it with my teenage son and his friends and really really enjoyed it.

You can play the game with 2 to 6 players. One side takes 4 heros (taken randomly from a pool of 8 different characters, farmers daughter, capt of the football team, the sheriff, the reverend, the drifter, all with different abilities, and the other managaes the horde of unrelenting zombies and their hunger for BRAINSSS. I was afraid a zombie game would just be wading through hordes of monsters and then winning or loosing on a die roll. NOT AT ALL. This game is fun, suspenseful and really well balanced. It also has a very high re-play value, Pulling town buildings at random, choosing randomly from a pool of characters each game, and drawing events from a card deck gave the game lots of twists and turns. But even with all this randomness the gamedoes not make you feel that you are at the mercy of the dice. The game also includes several different scenarios. Escaping town, defending the mansion, saving the townsfolk and the ever popular die zombies die!

Last comment. The game is advertised as delivering a movie-like experience…and it does. It is fun, suspensful, well balanced and you can play it over and over again.

  2. Darkenmoon says:

I received this game for Christmas after having heard about it while browsing Amazon for new nerdy board games. I was SO excited to see it as I unwrapped the package.

The character cards, the plot cards, the game board pieces, and everything you punch out are of thick sturdy cardboard. These are going to last a good long time. The cards are like your regular playing cards in thickness and quality. The zombies and characters are out of sturdy plastic. This game has been build to last.

I like that they have included a CD with music for the game to add even more to the Zombie B Movie feel. This is a really nice touch and attention to detail.

The instructions are not overwhelming in length and are not complicated. This is a nerdy game, so do not expect short instructions. They are clear though and it won’t take long to get up to speed with game play. After your first game you will be good with either zombies or heroes… whichever you play. You can play either zombies or heroes and that also adds a bit of extra fun.

One thing I wish that they had done was create the box insert so that it better held all the pieces once you’ve cut them out. I found that once all the pieces were punched out and placed either willy nilly into the box or neatly into small bags, it was hard to fit everything in and still get the box completely closed. It closes close enough… but not 100%… and that’s only if you take the CD out and put it elsewhere. If you leave the CD in, it’s not going to close properly.

This game is a very good investment and I would highly recommend it. It’s going to last a long time and with the different plots, it’s going to have a good long life in your game collection.

  3. This is by far the best game I have played in a very long time.

The tension builds and even when things look really bad [or really good] the game can change on a dime. There is a perfect balance of “strategy” and “luck” in this game so you don’t feel like a slave of the dice. Long term strategies can be planned for and if things go your way actaully can pay off..or go horribly wrong.

I have gotten tothe point I can actually envision the movie that would have the events going on…here is a sample from the last three turns of last night’s game:

“Sally [a student], Jack [a drifter], and Sheriff Anderson are pinned in the Plant. Their friend, football start Johnny just turned into a zombie before their eyes after getting his last wound. Four zombies are pinned in by Old Besty the dog in the back of the plant just a step away from Sally and Jack. Sheriff Anderson is pinned down by two zombies and is blocking the only door. They have just an hour to destroy the last zombie spawning pit before the sun comes up and the whole town turns. Quick thinking Jack pulls the fire estinguisher and flushes the four pinned zomibes out the window of the plant and sprays the two fighting the sherrif to give him a chance to flee the door. Sally follows behind and runs to the gun shop to try to grab a revolver. Alas, the zombies waiting for Sally in the gun shop attack her and turn her into a zombie who begins to pursue Jack who has the last stick of dynamite needed to blow the spawn pit. Jack heads out the door with a horde of zombies from all directions hunting him down, including Zombie Sally, he turns and plugs Zombie Johnny in the head with a signal flare gun he picked up the airplane hanger earlier. As he approaches the last spawn pit just as the sun starts to cross the horizon, the zomibies are all over him keeping him from lighting the dynamite…but Sheriff Anderson dashes over with a pump action shotgun and goes Rambo on them from 2 spots away and sprays zombie guts all over Jack as he manages to light the dynamite and destroy the last spawn pit to end the Zombie rampage…hero’s win!”

Coolest part of the game is if feel JUST like that while you are playing, the tension, the build up, the heroic last ditch efforts….

    This game is AWESOME!!!!

  4. Game Master says:

“BRRAAAINNSSS….” quoth the zombie. If you like zombies/zombie movies/or just battling against your friends in quick and fun games, I’d recommend this game to you.

This game is a 2-6 player competitive game. One team controls the zombies, and one team controls the heroes. There are a number of scenarios (Escape in the Truck, Defend the Manor, Die Zombies, DIE!, etc) which all require different strategies for the heroes to prevail.

The zombie strategy is almost always “eat the heroes”. However, zombie players can certainly utilize tactics, such as hiding behind buildings, or in them, to make life more difficult for the heroes.

The rules aren’t very complex, and the rule-book contains nice illustrations to explain each point. Also included are ‘advanced’ rules at the end of the book, to explain the included scenarios, and uses for the ‘advanced’ cards (which are not shuffled in to the 2 decks initially).

The zombies only move 1 space per round, while the heroes move 1d6 spaces. Frequently heroes move 1 space, also. This increases the excitement of the game, because the zombies can immediately catch up and engage the heroes in combat.

Also in the game are cards for each team. Zombies get to have 4 cards in their hand at the start of each round, while heroes typically only earn cards by forgoing movement in a building, and searching. The cards can be items (chainsaw for example), events (rainfall, slowing heroes down by 1 space for example) or fight cards (bonus dice, forced-rerolls of results, etc). The cards make the game more interesting, and many of the scenarios are dependent on drawing certain cards to complete objectives.

The game looks nice, the modular board allows for variety in replaying the game. Instead of cartoons or drawings, actual photographs are used throughout the game making for a nice production. The plastic models are well-sculpted, and the included cards are all very durably made. There are also a bunch (20 or so) of 6 sided dice, more than I’ve ever had a reason to roll in one combat, so they provide well in this area also.

Since each scenario is completed or failed in a set number of turns, the game cannot drag on indefinitely. This is a huge plus, particularly if you’ve played never-ending games of Monopoly, or Risk.

There are also a number of expansions for the game, if you play frequently, that can add even more mayhem and chaos to the scenarios.
