Product Description
Red November is a cooperative game in a gnomish attack submarine where everything is going wrong. The sub is descending and the water pressure increasing, the nuclear reactor is overheating, the nuclear missile launchers are pre-igniting, fires and water leaks are everywhere, there’s a giant Kraken looming nearby and theres very little oxygen and vodka left. While the storyline feels more and more like a disaster movie, the players must get organized to solve the problems, divide the tasks among themselves to minimize the risks, and sometimes accept to sacrifice themselves for the common cause. / / The game is played on the map of the submarine. The conditions in the submarine are represented by three disaster tracks: Asphyxiation, Heat and Pressure. During the game, these conditions get worse, and if anyone of them reaches its maximum value, the submarine is lost. In addition, various emergencies can occur which have to be dealt with swiftly, or they’ll also lead to the loss of the submarine. / / Each turn, a player can move to a new location, and perform some action there. Such an action can be repairs (which will improve conditions on the sub and/or fix emergencies), removing obstacles (unblocking hatches, removing flooding or extinguishing fires) or stocking up on equipment (which will help with later actions). Each action is paid for with time. The more time a player spends on an action, the greater the chance of success. After each player’s turn, a number of events will happen; the more time was spent, the more events will occur. Such events will be the worsening of conditions in the submarine, or the triggering of emergencies. / / If the Gnomes can keep alive long enough, rescue will arrive and the game is won.

2 Reveiws for Red November

  1. Spin360 says:

I bought Red November based on the only other review here.

We have family game night 2x a week with 2 adults and a 13yo. I was looking for a cooperative game to play. The only other true cooperative we have is Castle Panic, which is also a great game.

Let me point out that this game takes place aboard a gnome submarine therefore everything about the game is small – including the board, the cards, and the pieces.

At first the game was so boring, my eyes were glazing over while I listened to the rules being read aloud as we tried to play. However after a few rounds the rules just clicked.

The game play was fairly quick. It took us about 30-40 minutes to play, including trying to learn the rules.

We laughed so hard that we could barely draw new cards. Several parts of our submarine caught on fire, we dealt with a few floods, and one of our players became a drunken, staggering gnome as we desperately tried to find him a cup of coffee as an antidote. Some people might be offended at the fact that the gnomes drink beer, but it isn’t really the focus of the game. The gnomes have 4 hit-points (lives/health points) and each beer they drink takes 1 away from their points. If he has a beer, drinking it gives the gnome an advantage to repair certain “problems” that arise throughout the game. Besides, it made the storyline very funny.

We did escape the submarine and win, but only barely.

We’ll definitely pull this one out again next time. Thank you Mitchell in VA for reviewing the game!

  2. I played this game for the first time a few months ago, and enjoyed it so much that I bought it at a local game shop the next day. The game accommodates 2 to 8 players, and the game dynamics adjust along with the number of players.

As someone who enjoys Risk and Monopoly, this game appeared complicated at first, but after playing it became much more intuitive.

As opposed to most board games, where players compete to reach a specific goal, Red November requires all players to cooperate in escaping a doomed submarine. Over the course of the game, pressure in the sub rises, fires start, Krakens attack and floods fill various rooms. Players are equipped with tools that help them overcome the challenges and rescue friends in danger.

Reading through the rulebook might intimidate some players to start, but after playing through a few turns, the game mechanics become much more intuitive. Plus, if even one player has played before, he or she can help guide new players as everyone is working together.

The board itself is made of thick cardboard, the pieces are all well made, the instruction book is pretty clearly written, and the artwork throughout is unique and humorous.

Overall, the game is absolutely worth your time and money. If you are willing to invest a half-hour reading the rules and have a bit of patience when starting out, you will have an absolute blast.

    Pros:

    - Players work together to escape the submarine. This helps new players adjust easily and keeps every player interested across everybody’s turn.

    - The physical board and pieces are well-made and durable.

    - Most games are over in less than an hour

    Cons:

    - May be a little bit intimidating to start.
