5 Reveiws for Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition Game

  1. aQuixRuby says:

who has a weekend to spend trying to learn a board game. the game is way too complicated to begin playing without reading and re-reading the instructions. then comes the need to recruit two other people that have nothing better to do with three plus hours (estimated game length once you’ve learned how to play). also through other reviews, i’ve learned that the twilight imperium has game play imbalances that are very difficult to overcome. the gaming dept for this title should host a forum where people that play this game can meet up with other people that play it.

  2. T. Ogle says:

Well, this game is complicated. The best way to learn how to play it is to sit down with the rules and figure out everything while you play it(which took us about 3 1/2 hours). After the rules were figured out though, the game went smoothly. My family and I are fans of other board games such as Diplomacy, Civilization(board game version), and The Settlers of Catan–But to me, this game crushes those games to dust.

Every round different strategy cards are picked(showing what advantages you will have that round), Action cards are picked(can give you powerful actions to use and have very funny descriptions), and Political cards can be played(in which each player votes on a law; laws passed can be either minor or game-changers). Along with the 10 alien races to be and the many other optional rules for the game, this is a fun game!

So I give this 5 stars, 10/10, 3 thumbs up, etc.

  3. This is not a game for the faint of heart, but it is a great way to bring together a group of friends for a solid afternoon of fun. This game is more complex than Risk, and indeed more complex than most games I’ve played but that’s kept the game interesting for the years I’ve been playing it. After you’ve picked up the rules, the replay value only increases.

Also, if pick up the Shattered Empire expansionShattered Empire Expansion for Twilight Imperium Third Edition, the new races and planets will only increase the diversity of the game.

  4. Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition was Fantasy Flight’s flagship game. Twilight Imperium is a game where players vie for the imperial throne of the galaxy. Each player takes on the role of a race with its own special abilities and starting units. Starting out with one planetary system, players move out, conquering planets, negotiating trade agreements, and passing interstellar laws in their efforts to make themselves emperor.

Each player selects, in turn order, a strategy card. The eight strategy cards cover the broad strategies any civilization would utilize to further its goals (Initiative, Diplomacy, Political, Logistics, Trade, Warfare, Technology and Imperial). Each strategy card has an initiative number which dictates the player order for the coming game round. Thus, players must weigh the strategy which gives them the strategy bonus they need but also gives them the initiative value they want.

During the action phase, players activate systems, move and build ships, buy technologies, pass interstellar laws and negotiate trade agreements. This is the meat of the game. What path to victory will you take? Conquer your opponent? Negotiate trades with your neighbors? Force uncomfortable laws to the forum? This game has it all.

The most innovate aspect of this game is the supply system. Players have command counters. Using the Logistics strategy card gives you more. You use command counters to increase your supply, allowing you build larger fleets. You may also use command counters to activate systems, allowing you to build and/or move ships. Command counters also let you use the secondary abilities of your opponents’ strategy cards.

Players accumulate victory points by meeting the requirements of objectives. These could be conquest, trade or technological related. A broad strategy is needed to have a competitive edge.

The game ends when a player reaches 10 victory points or when the “Imperium Rex” objective is revealed. Whoever has the most points is declared the emperor.

This game, while worthy of a 5***** rating is not without its baggage. The Imperial strategy card is quite bad. You should use the Imperial II card (or play with the expansion). Also, the technology tree is overly convoluted. Some of the laws are not as spikey as they need to be. Due to the game’s adaptability, I can easily overlook these flaws.

Twilight Imperium takes about 4 to 6 hours to play. This means you will spend the better part of a day playing this epic game. This is not a gateway game. Newbies will be overwhelmed by its depth and complexity. This game is strictly for the hardcore gamer. If you ever wanted to play a space game with awesome bits, epic theme and multiple paths to victory, Twilight Imperium is the game for you.

  5. Really impressive game. But here is a list of things (Not mentioned on the box)that it doesn’t come with that you will need to enjoy this game:

    1. A very big table. An option to the table is a living/dining room floor. Go with a hard surface type.

    2. At least 5 friends (up to 8 with the expansion) with a high school diploma (or equivalent). High school drop-outs are not recommended for this game. They will only frustrate others when they quit playing half way through the game.

    3. More 10 sided dice. Just because.

    4. At least (6) hours of butt time for one single day

This game is one of the best games I have ever played. But it has its drawbacks. You have to find friends/strangers (though strangers are not recommended for safety reasons) who have the love, patience and intelligence to play a game of this caliber. Within the game itself you can adjust the difficulty level (including the expansion) from intense to ludicrous. Remember when Spaceball One hit ludicrous speed and Barf saw a rainbow??? Its like that. Give yourself a weekend to get the game dialed in, and set the right intensity for your friends/strangers (again strangers are not recommended). The game itself is kind of like Starwars meets BSG meets Star Trek meets Monopoly meets Puerto Rico meets Axis and Allies. This is a Hodgepodge of everything great in modern science fiction and classic strategy games but losing a little (probably due to trademark infringements) of its luster, its kind of like American Chinese Food.
