What's the story with Get Fishy?
I designed Get Fishy in about an hour.
I received a collection of baubles and bits from the good folks at BoardSprints (https://boardsprints.com/) for their Spring 2026 game design contest. The challenge was to design a "marine themed" game, and I had to use some or all of the bits they sent.
I immediately found the plastic bingo markers and they reminded me of the old game "Tiddlywinks" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiddlywinks). Then I thought of fishing holes, and that was that.
The whole game idea unfolded into pretty much exactly what the final version turned out to be.
I turned to my kids and friends for original art (which ended up being a great experience in family bonding) and designed, built and tested the game in 30 days. I submitted it to the design contest and was awarded the prize for "Best Ludonarrative Harmony" game. I had no idea what that meant, but now I do!
This is the first game I've designed where I've gone from designing the game to creating all the marketing assets: Sell sheet, box design, web page, promo videos, and tradeshow materials for my company, Boardgamer Games.
It's really exciting, and has been a lifelong dream. So thank you to Courtney at BoardSprints, and Johnny at Game Market West!! You've provided the impetus to really launch this dream, and I will be forever grateful.
