Want to get into a rousing fantasy Adventure with your family or friends fast?

Love deep games, but not the long rulebooks?
Our connected game system helps teach the game as you play—guiding players through rules, phases, and choices so you can spend less time learning and more time playing.

Then this is the game for you.

Legendary Dungeons is a great introductory Dungeon crawling board game for teens and adults that is quick to learn, packs in the Adventures, is super cool to show your friends, and infinitely replayable. You can even allows you to create your own adventures!

Original DnD Basic Items.png

Original D&D Equipment List

We have tried our best to pour all of the cool stuff we like about fantasy games into this experience.

  • You play as a Party

  • You use all the RPG dice types (d4 to d20)

  • You select and improve a character through a simple experience system

  • You role play (Yes! This board game brings actual role playing in!)

  • Monsters are unique and challenging, but Combat is quick and straightforward

  • You embark on a grand Adventure with a deep story that expands continuously through play, and there are multiple Adventure Modules for replayability

You can even write your own Adventures into this simple system, building your own maps, events, and special challenges for others to enjoy.

And now there is a reconfigurable 3D dungeon board lit up by an actual torch light!

There is even a “DM-like” role called The Fatebinder. Though not required, it is highly recommended, and is actually one of my favorite roles to play in the game.

There are spells, magic items, weapons, traps, and gear (I even made sure to include the original list of items available in the very first DnD rules and give them real purpose. I mean, what the heck were you supposed to do with a 10 foot pole and an iron spike?? And I love that Wine is on the list, like twice!).

The good news is that unlike DnD, it doesn’t take long to learn at all.

Plus, like a "DM-lite", the Fatebinder can really add some unique moments with opportunities to create a more engaging, fun and rich experience for everyone. Just put on your inner “theater kid” hat and do those NPC voices!

In the end, I hope this is a great introductory (and even advanced) game to the Fantasy Adventure RPG genre. I’ve had lots of fun designing this, and playing it with kids and adults alike.

I hope you find it as entertaining as I do, and that it brings your friends and family that amazing escape and bonding experience that only a good adventure can.

Here are some adventure summaries so you get an idea of the world you'll be stepping into...

Adventure 1: The Tablets of Woe

The Red Dragon, Varlax the Vile, has obtained the fabled Tablets of Woe and used them to unleash a magical plague on your people that destroys all good fortune and sows sadness deep within all hearts. You must find the three Tablets and destroy them, along with the dragon, in order to save your people from their misery. Finally, you must attempt to kill or bani

As you descend, you must find all three Tablets and destroy them. Each Tablet you destroy will offer you a blessing that will aid you in the final battle against Varlax, so make sure to get them all!

Varlax will jealously guard his treasures, and his wrath is legendary! Once you face him, you’d better be ready to destroy him, or find a way to banish him. He is a vicious and powerful foe that only Callus has been known to survive!

Adventure 2: The King's Betrayal

The Archmage Asmodeus and the Wizard’s Council have been betrayed... by their King.

In an attempt to banish three powerful Demon’s from their ruinous rampage across the kingdom, the Wizard’s Council agreed to perform a powerful spell, making themselves the bait to trap the Demons and thereafter banish them back to the Hells from which they came.

The King & Queen promised to allow a group of young people, each with pure souls, to aid the Wizard’s in escaping the Demons before the magi were lost to the planes of Hell. The pure souls would distract the Demons and the Wizards would banish them to the Hellplane, then escape just as the gateways closed. However, at the last moment, during the height of the spell, The King forced the young ones to abandon the Wizards, for one of these pure souls was his daughter and he would not risk losing her.

Asmodeus, the Archmage, saw the King’s betrayal, and instead of banishing the Demons they allowed themselves to become possessed, becoming Dark Wizards. The Archmage vowed to make the King pay for his cowardice and lies. The great mage also saw the anger of the young heroes as they were forced to abandon their charge, especially in the eyes of the Archmage’s own daughter.  He hoped that one day his daughter might convince the young ones to return to save them.

You and your companions were the Pure Souls meant to help the Wizard’s escape. The Archmage’s daughter, furious at the King's betrayal, has convinced all of you that you were tricked and robbed of your honor, and that you still have a chance to save the kingdom.

You have decided to descend into the Dungeon to reclaim that honor by saving the Wizards and your homeland.  If you cannot save the Wizards, then you know you must still destroy and banish the Demons back to the Hellplane before it's too late!

How to Play

How to Play Legendary Dungeons

Legendary-Dungeons-Character-Sheet.png

Choose a class.

Fighter, Wizard, Rogue or Cleric (more classes to come, but these are the heart of any classic dungeon romp!)

Each class comes with a deep skill tree. You choose two skills to start, level 1. But then you must earn your skills by gaining experience and selecting which trees to develop.

Each class has different still trees, each with 4 levels of skills and multiple options.

Select an Adventure.

Adventures are organized by difficulty and play time. Most Adventures are broken into Chapters, so your playtime for any given session doesn't need to be longer than 90 minutes to get to a good stopping point. Then you save your game!

Your party (players) can rejoin the game on the next game night and off you go deeper into the depths!

Set up the Dungeon.

Each Adventure will offer a different dungeon configuration and design.

Dungeon floors will be two sided, come in different shapes and sizes, with set pieces including stairs and ladders to offer paths up or down.

Then there are unique Chambers, Treasures, and Roaming Monsters that get placed throughout each level as you enter - offering an incredible amount of replayability Adventure to Adventure.

Journey Forth!

Gear up by visiting The Shoppe, then step into the Dungeon!

You'll have a mystery to solve, monsters to slay, and treasures to find all while facing multiple levels of bosses.

Role Playing

Legendary Dungeons offers a totally new Board Game experience! Actual Role Play! (not required for those shy types)

As you play, the game presents different opportunities for you as a player to deepen the lore of the world around you though quick story telling (or B.S.!).

Add your imagination to the tale:

  • Describe the Details of a Room

  • Create a backstory for your Character

  • Learn deep Lore about the Dungeon and the world of The Prison Stones

  • Tell tall tales about your party member's past exploits! (Yes, Marv really did moon the temple guards!)

Meet the NPCs!

There are many denizens of the deep for you to meet as you delve.

Enter unique Chambers where you can find everything from a chance to gamble your gear to an apothecary selling potions and magic trinkets.

The Dungeon has many NPCs that make their homes in the dark. You'll soon expect to run into them from time to time in each Adventure!

Play as The Fatebinder!

One of the funnest roles to play is to be The Fatebinder. - the Dungeon overlord, the final word.

While this role is not required for the game, it definitely adds the depth and fun that your favorite DM would, plus it doesn't require that you read 1,000 page game manuals to play!

Managing the Dungeon

  • Roll for the Dungeon Turn & Events

  • Award RPG Points! Give rare RPG tokens if players rock a performance.

  • Draw & Read Monster Cards

  • Manage the Monster Tracker

  • Roll & Control Monsters in Combat

  • Read Adventure & Dungeon Events (Use voices)

  • Read & Assist with Level Setup

  • Manage the App

  • Make Rule Calls (use common sense as needed if you don't want to look up a rule)

Legendary-Dungeons-Fatebinders-Tome.jpg

Managing the Campaign

As the Fatebinder there are multiple ways you can put your own touches on the game:

  • Instead of auto-moving monsters, move Roaming Monsters the direction you choose

  • Block a room or stair with a Cave In or Locked Door!

  • Set an Ambush by spawning a Roaming Monster!

  • Choose the type of Dungeon Space event to occur. Rather than rolling, instead decide to:

    • Spawn a Monster!

    • Give a Quest!

    • Spawn a Treasure!

    • Place a Locked Door!

    • Trigger a Trap!

    • Trigger a Random Event (anywhere)!

  • Select Your Monster! Choose a foe from the monster deck yourself rather than drawing from the top of the level deck.

Monster Tracker

Play as a Party

Most dungeon crawlers have you playing your character as an individual, even if it's a cooperative game. We wanted to recreate the full party experience though, as you play in the greatest table top RPGS.

  • Shared light source (e.g. Torches & Lanterns determine your movement)

  • Shared gold supply

  • Shared potions, items and other gear

  • Track party and dungeon quests

  • Add NPCs or Pets to the party

The Story

What's the story with Legendary Dungeons?

I’m 56 years old. Everyone knows I’m a gamer, musician, writer, artist, and all around uber-nerd. I grew up when DnD was invented, and played the board game Dungeon!™ (1975) many times, as well as Dungeons & Dragons™ of course.

While DnD was great, it was always hard to find a good DM™ and people to play with regularly (for me). And while I had fun playing Dungeon! as a kid because it was simple and I loved the theme, it was ultimately too simple and totally unbalanced (sorry to all the fans, but it is!). I always wanted something in between - something that captured that magical forest realm between the village of Dungeon! and the mountain of DnD.

That desire was where the seed of Legendary Dungeons™ came from, so thank you David R. Megarry (Dungeon! designer) for all the joy, fun, and inspiration you’ve given me!

After I had kids, I of course introduced them to Dungeon! But I could not resist altering the rules, not only to fix balancing issues, but to add more traditional fantasy elements that would make it even more fun.

Original hand drawn Shop cards I made quickly one night

At first, I added a simple Store where players could buy items to improve their characters, or potions and scrolls to add unique effects to the game and to balance out the characters.

The poor Rogue had no chance of surviving Levels 5 & 6, and only the Wizard could really make it down there. Given the winning condition was whoever got the most gold, that seemed unfair, as everyone knew all the big treasures were deep in the gullet of the Purple Worm or buried in the hordes of the Dragons!

That evolved, and I decided to create special events that would occur in each of the Chambers, like The Kitchen or Armory, or… the Hole! Of course something was going to come out of that Hole! It felt like they really needed a story!

Those places looked like they should be interesting, and like DnD, offer the players some choices or storyline to increase engagement. I made some Chambers offer the heroes benefits, like cures for curses and healing (oh, yeah, I added a Health stat too to both Heroes and Monsters, as Combat was too fast and had no strategic choices!).

Then I added Adventures to create a motivation for the game beyond gold, and something that required a Party to work as a team rather than toward their own ends. Wouldn’t it be better to have to slay a Dragon together? I mean, in DnD you always play as a Party where bonds are forged through common experience. Just getting more gold wasn’t really all that interesting, and I wanted my kids to learn something more about working together.

I even created new board overlays people can download and print themselves, designed to match the same art style of the board so they felt like part of the game. The overlays helped to track the sequence of play, roaming monsters, the new monster attack and dungeon turn tables, track monster health, and more.

Custom made Dungeon! board overlay #1: Dungeon Turn Table, Monster Health Tracker, and Hero Rest Table. NOTE: This was made for my own personal use, as Wizards of the Coast does not allow game expansions to be created and shared.

Custom made Dungeon! board overlay #2: Combat Table, Sequence of Play and Monster Damage

Example of new Monster Attack Table:

I planned to offer these for free online, but Wizards of the Coast does not allow fans to give away free expansions like that, which I can understand. So it just stayed here at home for the enjoyment of friends and family.

All of this was intended to work with what the game already had so you didn’t have to have new monster cards or heroes, just new rules and some free to print shop cards and board overlays.

At the same time I was messing with the original game, my two teenage kids (both of whom follow in my nerdom footsteps) and a number of their friends had been asking me to teach them how to play DnD, or to be a DM for them in their first adventure.

However, It occurred to me that attention spans being what they are today (sorry kids!), it might not be likely that they would want to learn all they needed to in order to play a full DnD campaign, and that learning DnD wasn’t actually what they were asking for. They wanted to have an adventure! They wanted to feel that thrill of role playing, and getting immersed in a fantasy world that challenged their thinking and got them excited to dive into that pool of imagination and wonder that is so attractive for the young and old to experience.

I looked at what I was doing to overhaul Dungeon! and realized it was becoming something more. I had a game that needed to break free of the limits of the Dungeon! board and components, and I felt like I was on the precipice of creating something more in line with the core of my original dream - to play something that captured the middle ground between the great DnD and Dungeon! Games - a really good “intro to RPG games” experience.

Thus, Legendary Dungeons was born.

I have tried my best to pour all of the cool stuff I felt about fantasy games into this experience.

You play as a Party. You have cool dice to roll. You select and improve a character through experience. You role play (Yes! This board game brings actual role playing in!). Monsters are unique and challenging, but battle is quick. You embark on a grand Adventure with a deep story that expands continuously through play, and there are multiple Adventure Modules for replayability.

You can even write your own Adventures into this simple system, building your own maps, events, and special challenges for others to enjoy.

Original equipment list in my old DnD game manual

There are spells, magic items, weapons, traps, and gear (I even made sure to include the original list of items available in the very first DnD rules and give them real purpose. I mean, what the heck were you supposed to do with a 10 foot pole and an iron spike?? And I love that Wine is on the list, like twice!).

And now there is a reconfigurable 3D dungeon board lit up by an actual torch light!

There is even a “DM-like” role called The Fatebinder. Though not required, it is highly recommended, and is actually one of my favorite roles to play in the game.

The good news is that unlike DnD, it doesn’t take long to learn at all. The Fatebinder can really add some unique moments (just like a good DM does), with opportunities to create a more engaging, fun and rich experience for everyone. Just put on your inner “theater kid” hat and do those NPC voices!

In the end, I hope this is a great introductory game to the Fantasy Adventure RPG genre. I’ve had lots of fun designing this, and playing it with kids and adults alike.

I hope you find it as entertaining as I do, and that it brings your friends and family that amazing escape and bonding experience that only a good adventure can.
